Netflix's Home Run Derby broadcast: A missed opportunity?
The MLB Home Run Derby on Netflix was a missed opportunity for the streamer to showcase its potential as a sports broadcaster. While the new format, without a countdown clock, was an obvious improvement, the broadcast itself had its flaws. The pre-game segment, featuring Will Ferrell, Jimmy Tatro, and Luke Wilson, was a thud, with poor audio and forced comedy. The main broadcast, however, had its bright spots. The lounge set, with Elle Duncan, Barry Bonds, and Albert Pujols, had potential, but the commentary was subdued and lacked insight. The booth with Matt Vasgersian, Anthony Rizzo, and Hunter Pence was more energetic but sometimes over-the-top.
The real issue lay in the camera work and the broadcast's focus. Netflix's cinematic ambitions overshadowed the core job of a Home Run Derby broadcast: showing the swing, the flight, and the landing. The camera kept switching angles, missing the crucial moment of contact, and the absence of exit velocity data further compounded the problem. The non-call on Junior Caminero's swing was a missed opportunity to show a replay, and the broadcast's focus on close-ups instead of the ball's flight was a constant frustration for viewers.
In my opinion, Netflix has the format and the infrastructure, but it needs the discipline to point the camera at the baseball. The Home Run Derby is a visceral, single-moment sport, and the broadcast should reflect that. The camera should stay on the hitter until contact, then follow the ball. Netflix has the potential to be a great sports broadcaster, but it needs to learn from this broadcast and focus on the core job of a Home Run Derby broadcast.
Personally, I think Netflix should have focused more on the swing and the flight, and less on the close-ups and self-promotional segments. The new format was a step in the right direction, but the broadcast itself needs improvement.
